For my final project I would ultimately like for it to be regarding sports. I'm looking to go into Sports Journalism so gearing my essay towards that would be the most productive option. I had a few ideas I was considering: One being the debate as to whether professional sports leagues should be allowed to implement an age limit which basically forces teens to become college athletes. I also was considering tackling the popular debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid. If those ideas don't work for the essay I would be glad to hear any other ideas anyone might have regarding the sports world.

  1. I think the question of paying athletes is suddenly something the consensus is coming to accept. Part of it is two sports documentaries you should see:

    1) Schooled (about the NCAA as a monopoly and the move to support athletes more)

    Amazon Prime: http://www.amazon.com/Schooled-College-Sports-Sam-Rockwell/dp/B00GM2MSGY/
    Netflix: http://www.netflix.com/search/schooled

    2) League of Denial (on the concussion and injury crisis in football and other sports)

They are related: the concussion and serious injury issue has made it seem more important to provide some assurances to athletes that we will not just dump them. Rutgers did well by Legrand, but no college sports program is actually required even to continue a scholarship once a student is injured. What's more, the BILLIONS being taken in by March madness and now by the College championship games has raised the stakes. Why should everyone make money except the ones working the hardest?

With privatization -- and the attitudes associated with it -- we have also laid the foundation. Not even Olympic athletes are amateurs anymore....

I think that would be a good topic.
